Indian Institute of Technology Ropar is one of the new IITs announced by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. IIT Ropar will be located at Roopnagar (formerly Ropar), along the bank of the Sutlej river, about 50 kms from Chandigarh. However, since the setting up of the new IIT in its final location will take some time, IIT Delhi has been assigned the job of incubating IIT Ropar.
To start with, a 4-year B.Tech programme is being offered in three branches, viz., Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a strength of 40 students in each branch. The curriculum, course structure and syllabus for the first year courses is broadly similar to (but not identical to) that in IIT Delhi. The first year classes are being held at the IIT Delhi campus, and the students admitted will be relocated to Roopnagar from the second year onwards.
