Sri Chitturi Indraiah Memorial Government College was established in Tanuku in the year 1968 vide G.O. Ms No. 1780, Dt. 26-09-1968 with the untiring efforts of Sri Chitturi Venkateswara Rao, The chief donar, who made the donation in the name of his illustrious late father Sri Chitturi Indraiah garu. The elite of the town left no stone unturned in making the dreams of establishing a Government College in Tanuku and the dreams turned into reality. The college has completed 56 years of Yeoman service to the noble cause of educating the rural and urban girls and boys in and around Tanuku. In 2008, the college became a partner institute of Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) under convergence scheme and launched a good number of Job-Oriented Certificate courses.
Tanuku is an important town in west Godavari District. It is situated on the banks of river ‘Gostani’. The history of Tanuku goes back to 11th century A.D, when Adi Kavi Nannaya Bhattaraka , the Famous poet of Telugu literature has performed “YAGJNAM” near the jammi tree . Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation visited Tanuku twice during the Indian Independence struggle. The famous poet Devarakonda Balagangadhara Tilak and the famous stage artist Balagandharva Sanmukhi Anjaneya Raju also belong to Tanuku. Andhra Sugars, the leading sugar factory was started in 1947 by Dr. MullapudI Hari Chandra Prasad. The Andhra Sugars is the major producer and supplier of Rocket Fuel to ISRO.
The college offers conventional courses like B.A., B.Com., B.Sc in Telugu and English medium. Keeping in view the changing trends in Higher Education, the institution has started Job-Oriented courses, Micro-Biology and Industrial Chemistry.
