The university has 5 colleges, 27 research centres, 6 agricultural extension education centres, 6 agricultural science centres and an agricultural technology information centre. The university has a geographical area of 7 districts of North Karnataka namely Bagalkot, Belgaum, Vijayapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts. There is a great diversity in soil types, climate, topography, cropping and agricultural conditions. The geographical area ranges from dryland to heavy rainfed and irrigated areas. The major crops of the region are maize, cotton, paddy, pulses, chillies, sugarcane, groundnut (peanut), sunflower, wheat, safflower etc. The region is also known for many horticultural crops.
