On August 8, 1955, the then-visionaries of western Assam founded a college in the historic town of Goalpara on the south bank of Brahmaputra inanapproximately 35.28-acre expanse of lush green land with the noble intention of catering the requirements of higher education of the aspiring youths of the peripheral area. Under the leadership of freedom fighter, first MLA of Goalpara Khagendranath Nath and eminent educationist Wazuddin Ahmed theArtsstreamflourished rapidly and eventually, in 1965, the Science stream was introduced.During the journey the college produced a galaxy of prolific alumni who have been contributing in different parts of the world.In 2015, the much-awaited Commerce stream was added to the oldest college of the region. Withthree streams having both honours and regular courses the college has been attracting thousands of students from various parts of the state including Meghalaya and West Bengal. The twice NAAC assessed, ISO 9001:2015 certified college participates in NIRF ranking. It offers 18 programs and has a student-strength of 2346. There are 73 members of teaching staff and 37 employees.
