The college was initially started as Maharaja High School by philanthropists in the area with the objective of imparting quality education in the then rural region. It was upgraded to an intermediate college in 1946 and became a degree college in 1958, initially offering only the Arts faculty. Subsequently, the college was taken over by the State Government in the same year. The faculties of Science and Commerce were added in 1963 and 1970, respectively. Postgraduate courses were introduced later, further enhancing the academic offerings of the institution.
