Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith is a public university located in Varanasi, also known as Banaras, in Uttar Pradesh, India. Founded in 1921 as Kashi Vidyapith and later renamed, it operates under the state legislature of the Uttar Pradesh government.
Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and Bhagwan Das established the university on February 10, 1921, amidst the non-cooperation movement of the Indian freedom struggle. Initially named Kashi Vidyapith, it was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith in 1995 and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi himself.
The university offers a variety of professional and academic courses in arts, science, commerce, law, computing, and management. Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith has been awarded a “B+ grade” by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
The university boasts over 350 affiliated colleges across five districts: Varanasi, Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Sonbhadra. It ranks among the largest state universities in Uttar Pradesh, serving hundreds of thousands of students from both rural and urban areas.
