For the purpose of uplifting women in and around Madurai, the Tamilnadu government founded Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women in 1965 in the temple city.  Located on a 16-acre site, the college started off with 320 students and 13 faculty and staff members. Currently, the college has been promoted to Grade I status and is ranked highly among the 14 Grade I institutions in Tamil Nadu.
