In order to promote technical education in the state's rural and tribal areas, the Maharashtra government established the Government College of Engineering, Karad, in 1960.For many years, the college has served as an essential hub for education and is associated with Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The college's GCEK courses are accredited by the NBA. It is a government institution with autonomy in Maharashtra.
The college offers postgraduate degrees in several specializations in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering in addition to UG degree courses in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Information Technology.

Library- There are 56475 volumes, 21624 titles, 2284 e-books, 4604 NPTEL videos, and 248 CDs in the Institute Library's collection. All fields are covered by the many national and international print and electronic journals to which subscribers have subscribed. Moreover, the Library provides campus-wide Intranet connectivity for the Online Public Access Catalogue Facility (OPAC).
Hostel-On campus, the Institute features one hostel for girls and three for boys. There is a separate PG hostel with space for fifty PG students. Every hostel has solar-powered emergency lighting systems, drinking water supplies, solar-heated water systems, and recreational spaces that include a modern gym.
