It was established in 1959 as the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, and was later renamed as NIT Warangal. The institute is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

NIT Warangal has been ranked 21^st and 45^th under the ‘Engineering’ and 'Overall' categories by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. It is the first among the 30 NITs established in the country.

• For UG Programs, candidates must have qualified their 10+2 level with a minimum aggregate of 75% along with a valid score in the entrance exams.
• For PG Programs, candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum aggregate of 60% along with a valid score in the entrance exams. Group Discussion and Personal Interview round is included for MBA programs.
