GATE 2017 Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an entrance exam conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE, Department of Higher Education and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for Post Graduate admissions offered by IITs, NITs, and other various private and government institutions. Through GATE score candidate can also get admission in Direct Ph.D. Regulating the GATE entrance exam and declaration of results lies with representatives from administering institutes who form a single body known as GATE Committee.

GATE is organized by IITs/IISc in round robin fashion. GATE 2017 is organized by IIT Roorkee.

GATE 2017 Notifications:

List of Rejected and Provisional candidates has been released.

Last date for GATE 2017 online applications is extended to 10th October 2016.

GATE 2017 online applications are available from 1st September 2016.

Last date for corrections/modifications is 16th November 2016.

Changes made in GATE 2017:

New Centres:

The following cities are added as new GATE Centres

  • Burdwan(IIT Guwahati Zone),
  • Dibrugarh(IIT Guwahati Zone) and
  • Gorakhpur(IIT Kanpur Zone)

New Paper:

The XE Paper now has a new section on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Section H. With this the number of sections in the XE paper has increased to eight A to H.

GATE for International Students:

GATE 2017 examination shall be held for international candidates in following Countries

GATE 2017 Eligibility:

Candidates must check their eligibility before applying for GATE 2017.

a) Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology (after 10+2/Diploma/B.Sc) and those who are in final year can also apply.

b) Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture (5 year course) and those who are in final year.

c) Bachelor’s Degree in Science (after 10+2/Diploma).

d) Master’s degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics / Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are final year.

e) Post-BSc Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering / Technology (4 year program) and those who are in 2nd/3rd/4th year

Post-Diploma/10+2 Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering / Technology (5 f) year program) and who are in 4th/5th year.

g) Integrated M.Sc. or 5 year integrated B. S. /M. S. program and those who are in final year.

h) B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. equivalent examinations of Professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g., AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India)

GATE 2017 Exam Pattern:

1. Mode: Computer based Test

2. Total Questions: A total of 65 questions will be given in the exam.

3. Total Marks: GATE 2017 exam is for a total of 100 marks

4. Duration: Total duration given for the exam is 3 Hours.

5. Type of Questions: Question paper consists of both Multiple Choice and Numerical Answer Questions.

6. Negative Marking: Marks will be deducted for wrong answer in multiple choice questions.

7. Every paper consists of a section of General Aptitude with 15 marks.

GATE 2017 Syllabus:

GA: General Aptitude

  • Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning and verbal deduction.

GATE 2017 Admit Card:

The candidates can download their GATE 2017 Admit Card from 5th January 2017, Thursday onwards. To download the admit card details like enrolment id, password etc will be required. Along with admit card, an id proof is also needed to enter in exam centre.

GATE 2017 Results and Score Card:

a) GATE 2017 results will be announced on March 27, 2017 at 17:00 hours and will be available on the GATE Online Application Website.

b) GATE 2017 score is valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of the results.

c) Qualified candidates can download their GATE 2017 Score Card after the results are declared, in between 27th March 2017 to 26th May 2017.

d) After 26th May 2017, if candidate requires soft copy of GATE Score Card, they can do so by paying a fee of Rs.500 /- on the GOAPS portal, till 31st December 2017.

GATE 2017 Counselling:

GATE Counselling procedure conducted by Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan (CCMT). Candidates get admission in NITs, IISc, through the counselling procedure which will be based on their score card. Counselling procedure will be scheduled after the results announcement.

GATE 2017 Instructions:

1. Candidates appearing for GATE 2017 examination must carry Admit Card and original photo-identity proof to examination hall.

2. Scribble pads will be provided to the candidates in the examination hall by the invigilators for rough work.

3. Before using such a pad, a candidate is required to write his/her name and registration number on the pad.

4. Carrying of a mobile phone (even in the switched-off mode) or any other electronic device that can be used for communication inside the examination hall may lead to disqualification.

5. Carrying of printed or hand-written textual material, inside the examination hall is strictly prohibited.

6. All forms of communication among the candidates inside the examination hall are strictly prohibited.

7. A virtual scientific calculator will be available on computer screen during the examination.

8. No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination hall after09:30 Hours (IST) in the forenoon session and after 14:30 Hours (IST) in the Afternoon Session.

9. Candidates will NOT be allowed to leave the examination hall for any reason during the test. 

10. Candidates whose enrolment ids have been displayed on website as provisional, need to bring the required documents and submit it in the examination hall to the authorities.

Preparation Tips:

i) Manage your time to cover all the subjects and topics.

ii) Understand each topic very clearly. GATE exam test the level and depth of your knowledge.

iii) Relax your mind and body at regular intervals of time and be health conscious.

iv) Get enough time for revision.

v) Refer previous question paper and identify the topics which have more marks.

vi) Solve previous question paper to within time.

FAQ:

Q1. Can I use one e-mail address to fill multiple application forms?

Ans. NO, one e-mail address can be used to submit only one application form.

Q2. My power/internet connection failed during the application process, what do I do?

Ans. Please login to the GATE 2017 application website https://appsgate.iitr.ac.in again and continue the application process

Q3. Only SC/ST/PwD candidates have been asked to upload the category certificates. What about the OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates? Do they have to upload the category certificate too?

Ans. NO. Category certificate is required only to decide the rate for the application fee.

Q4. My power/internet connection failed during online payment. What do I do?

Ans. When you can get back online, first check the status of your payment on the GATE application website.

a) If the payment was received by GATE, you can continue the process of printing the application form.

b) If the payment was not received by GATE, you have to start with the payment step again, to complete payment.

Q5. My bank account has been debited (money taken out), but GATE Application website says that the payment has not been received. What do I do?

Ans. This happens because of some failure in internet transactions. You MUST initiate a fresh payment process on the GATE application website, and make the payment again. The money that was debited from your account in the first attempt will be credited to your bank account within seven working days. You will be charged only once. Any excess/unaccounted debits will be returned to you.

Q6. Do I have to send the print-out of the application form?

Ans. No.

Q7. When and how will I know the status of my application?

Ans. You can check the status of your application by logging into GOAPS website.

Q8. Which identification card numbers shall be accepted in application form?

Ans. Only numbers of the following identification cards shall be accepted: Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, college ID, Employee Identification Card for Indian candidates and for International candidates, ONLY a valid Passport/ Government issued ID/College ID/ Employee ID/Driving License shall be accepted as the recognized identification.
