In his Independence Day Speech on August 15, 2003, then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee announced opening up of 6 AIIMS Hospitals at Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur and Rishikesh under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) launched for up gradation of medicare facilities in underserved areas of the country besides providing quality medical education in super-specialty disciplines in these areas.

The foundation stone of this institute in Bhubaneswar was laid by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee on July 15, 2003.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar was established as autonomous institution and institute of National importance through the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Ordinance passed on 16th July, 2012.

    M.B.B.S Medical - Must have passed 10+2 / Intermediate / Higher Secondary with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
    B.Sc. Medical - 10+2 with ~45–50% marks; entrance exam in many cases
    MD Medical - Must have an MBBS degree from a university/institution recognized by the NMC (National Medical Commission) / MCI.
    M.S Medical - Must have an MBBS degree from a university/institution recognized by the NMC (National Medical Commission) / MCI.
    M.D.S Medical - Minimum Marks in BDS General category: 50% SC/ST/OBC: 40% PwD (General): 45%
    DM Medical - Must have a postgraduate medical degree (MD / MS / DNB) in the relevant specialty from an NMC-recognized institution.
    M.Ch Medical - Educational Qualification Must hold a recognized postgraduate degree in surgery: MS (Master of Surgery) OR DNB (Diplomate of National Board in Surgery) in the relevant specialty.
    Ph.D Medical - Educational Qualification Master’s degree in a relevant subject from a recognized university. Minimum 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates). Eligible PG degrees include: M.Sc., M.A., M.Com., M.Tech., MBA, MD/MS, MDS, DNB, M.Pharm., LLM, etc. depending on the subject area.
