Medical by NIRF Ranking 2025

The NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) 2025 is one of the most influential yardsticks in India’s higher education system. Released annually by the Ministry of Education, the NIRF ranks medical institutions nationwide based on critical parameters like teaching quality, research output, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception. For students aspiring to enter the medical profession, as well as for parents and recruiters, the NIRF rankings 2025 in Medical category will serve as a reliable guide in assessing the credibility and performance of India’s premier medical colleges. The 2025 edition, released on September 4th, once again highlights the dominance of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, while also showcasing the growing competitiveness of other medical institutes across the country.

NIRF Ranked Top Medical Colleges in 2025

In the Medical Category, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi remained untouchable at the top, followed by PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore. Institutions such as JIPMER Puducherry and NIMHANS Bengaluru emphaveized specialization in key areas such as postgraduate training and mental health sciences. Private universities have also secured their place, with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Kasturba Medical College, Manipal demonstrating that quality medical education is no longer confined to government institutions alone.

NIRF Ranking Parameters (2025)

The rankings are based on a comprehensive evaluation using five major parameters, each with specific weightages. The following parameters are listed below for better clarity on how NIRF Rankings work.

  1. Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR): This parameter evaluates faculty quality, infrastructure, and availability of academic resources, student-faculty ratio and percentage of PhD-qualified faculty, adequacy of laboratories, hospitals, and clinical facilities and utilization of financial resources for academic growth.
  2. Research and Professional Practice (RP): This parameter assesses the scope and impact of research, innovation, and clinical contributions. It further assesses publications, citations, patents, and high-quality medical research, grants, collaborative projects, and contributions to health innovation. In 2025, negative scoring was applied for retracted publications to encourage research integrity.
  3. Graduation Outcomes (GO): This measures the success of students after graduation as it assesses students in placement rates, higher studies, and success in national exams like NEET-PG and USMLE. Median salary and achievements in medical careers are also assessed under this parameter.
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI): Captures diversity and accessibility. It sees the representation of students across regions, genders, and social groups. This parameter also assesses scholarships, financial aid, and support for differently-abled students.
  5. Perception (PR): Gauges the reputation of institutions among peers, recruiters, and the medical community. It sees national and international visibility of the institutes. Feedback from healthcare organizations, hospitals, and academic experts are also taken into consideration.

New Dimension Introduced in 2025: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This year, NIRF integrated SDG-linked practices, rewarding institutions that promote social and environmental responsibility, community health initiatives, and sustainable medical practices.

Entrance Exams Considered by NIRF

For medical institutions, the NIRF ranking framework factors in performances in national-level entrance examinations that define the student body quality.

NEET-UG: For undergraduate admissions to MBBS programs across AIIMS, government, and private medical colleges.

NEET-PG: For postgraduate medical education, shaping the graduation outcome scores of many institutions.

AIIMS INI-CET & JIPMER Exams: Specialized entrance pathways that feed into premier institutes.

The emphasis on entrance exams ties directly to the Graduation Outcomes (GO) parameter, as high-performing students strengthen institutional outcomes in placements, specializations, and research.

Importance of NIRF Medical Rankings

The NIRF Medical Rankings carry immense weight in shaping student choices and institutional reputations. For medical aspirants, they act as a compass for career decisions, indicating where academic rigor, clinical exposure, and research opportunities are at their peak. For medical institutions, performing well in the NIRF rankings enhances funding opportunities, collaborations, and global recognition, enabling them to contribute more effectively to India’s healthcare ecosystem.
