Situated in Varanasi, the holy city, Banaras Hindu University is a globally renowned centre of study. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the renowned nationalist leader, established this imaginative and inventive institution in 1916 in close collaboration with notable individuals such as Dr Annie Besant, who saw it as the institution of India. The Parliamentary Act known as the B.H.U. Act 1915 created Banaras Hindu University.
BHU offers a wide range of courses related to all areas of humanities, social science, technology, medicine, science, fine arts, and performing arts. It is comprised of 6 Institutes, 14 Faculties, 144 Departments, 4 Inter-Discplinary Centers, a constituent college for women, and 3 Constituent Schools. There are six centers for advanced studies, ten departments under the Special Assistance Program, and numerous other specialized Research Centers.
