Under the aegis of Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of Uttarakhand GIHM was setup in the year 1982 to provide students with the best possible opportunity to acquire relevant, up to date knowledge of the subject area of hotel and tourism management and to develop skills appropriate to their present and future needs.

The institute was conducting a 3 years diploma in hotel management and catering till 2006 and has introduced a 4 years Bachelor Course in Hotel Management since 2007 which is affiliated to Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
