The former Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur was renamed as Harcourt Butler Technical University.   The university was established in 1921 and later granted university status in 2016 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.  HBTU is accredited with an A+ rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
