The foundation stone of the Khariar College building was laid on Vijaya Dashmi in 21st October 1977. The College started with approximately 67 students admitted to I.A. (Intermediate of Arts). It got permanent government concurrence in 1979 for IA, 1980 for BA & 1986–87 for Science & Commerce. The College is accredited by NAAC with grade B certification and got autonomous status from the session 2012. In accordance with the State Government’s restructuring of higher education, the College, which was formerly affiliated to Sambalpur University (1983–2019), was brought under the jurisdiction of Kalahandi University (2019-2024). Further in the year 2024 as the name of Kalahandi University changed to Maa Mainkeshwari University, Bhawanipatna, currently the college is affiliated to Maa Mainkeshwari University, Bhawanipatna. This new affiliation has opened fresh opportunities for academic coll aboration and regional development. To further strengthen its academic autonomy and quality, the institution was conferred Autonomous Status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 8th November 2013.
In subsequent years, the College expanded its academic profile with the introduction of B.Sc. and B.Com programmes, and gradually, Honours courses were added across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. The College has also center for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Odisha State Open University (OSOU) for distance learners.
It is one of the most sought-after colleges in the Belgarh of Khariar area for men and women education. It has grown to its present stature under the able guidance of the founder principal, Mr. Kishor Chandra Mohapatra and the first chairperson of the Governing Body Mr.Rajendra Narayan Tiwari . Subsequent chairpersons and members of the Governing Body and Principals added their valuable contributions to the growth and development of the college over the years.In 1986, the college shifted to its present new building, built on a 30.25-acre plot donated by RANI SAHIBA of Khariar Mrs.Soubhagya Manjari Devi. The college has developed beautiful gardens and ornamental lawns which contribute to the overall aesthetics of the college and enhance the learning experience. The dedication, commitment and loyalty of the teaching and non-teaching staff, along with the enthusiasm and achievements of the students over the years, have contributed largely to bring the college to its present position. Today, the college offers 16 disciplines with honours courses at the undergraduate, graduate and Four post graduate courses- Chemistry, Political Science, Hindi and Odia. At present the number of students is around 3500.
