It had taken, decades for the College to take shape. At the behest of Sir Thomas Munro a Committee of public instruction was formed in 1826. In 1836 the duties of the Committee of public instruction was taken over by "The Committee of Native Education." The plan drawn up by the Committee did not commend themselves to Lord Elphinstone who in turn proposed nineteen resolutions which were passed unanimously. The gist of the resolutions was as follows:"That it is expedient that a Central Collegiate Institution or University should be established at Madras". "The Madras University to consist of two principal departments, a College for the Higher Branches of Literature, Philosophy and Science, and a High School for the Cultivation of English Literature and of the vernacular languages of India and the elementary departments of Philosophy and Science".

    MCA Computers - Must have a Bachelor’s degree (BCA, BSc in CS / Maths / related, or BA / BCom / BBA etc. with appropriate mathematics / statistics background).
    BCA Computers - Pass 10+2. Often colleges require Mathematics or Computer Science as one of the subjects in 10+2. Some require a minimum aggregate (e.g. 50 %).
    M.Sc. Science - Bachelor’s degree in science / related discipline (BSc or equivalent) in relevant subject area, meeting required minimum marks.
    M.Phil Science - Must possess a Master’s degree (MA, MSc, MCom, MCA, etc.) in the relevant subject from a recognized university, with a minimum required percentage (often 55% or as defined by university).
    B.Sc Science - Pass 10+2 with appropriate science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Maths / related) from a recognized board.
    BA Arts - Pass 10+2 / Higher Secondary / equivalent from a recognized board.
    MA Arts - Bachelor’s degree in a relevant arts / humanities discipline (or any degree with relevant subject) from a recognized university.
    MSW Arts - Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university. Some seats may have preference or additional criteria (experience, interview). Presidency offers MSW as a PG program.
    B.Com Commerce - Pass 10+2 (HSC or equivalent). Some programmes may prefer commerce / accounting / business subjects.
    M.Com. Commerce - Bachelor’s degree in Commerce / BCom / or equivalent (or related business / accounting / economics) from a recognized university, with requisite minimum marks.
