Established in 2001, VCET is a coeducational engineering college run by the Vellalar Educational Trust. In order to offer high-quality, reasonably priced education, VET was established in 1969. VCET is associated with Anna University Chennai and has AICTE approval.

In addition to three research centers authorized by Anna University for PhDs, the college provides nine undergraduate programs and five graduate programs. Over 3100 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs to further their knowledge. In 2016, the NBA accredited four undergraduate programs under its Tier 2 scheme: BE Biomedical Engineering, B.E Computer Science and Engineering, B.E Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and B.E Electronics and Communication Engineering. In 2018, the NBA also accredited a B.Tech program in information technology.

VCET has established a strong placement record, with dedicated efforts from its Training and Placement Cell. The college boasts an impressive placement rate of approximately 90%, with many students securing positions in reputable companies across various sectors. Numerous scholarships are provided by the government, other nonprofits, and the college administration to meritorious students at VCET.
