Dr. A. V. Baliga College Of Commerce was established in 1966 as a pioneer institution in the field of Business Education. It is one of the prominent educational institutions managed by the KANARA College Society which has 5 other institutions under its management.
The College is situated on a 38 acre land at Kumta along with the other institutions and is recognized by the UGC under 2f and 12B in 1996. The College is a grant in aid institution and affiliated to the Karnataka University. The College defines its goals as continuous up-gradation of knowledge, skills and human values of its teachers and students. Equally emphatic are the numerous objectives defined to lead the students to success and excellence in the field of Commerce and Management studies
In 1960s Uttara Kannada was an utterly backwoods for a majority of bright and aspiring young scholars of the district, higher education in Commerce and Management was inaccessible and a matter of dream. The history of Dr. A. V. Baliga college of Commerce, Kumta is the history of translation of the distant dream into a practical proposition and eventual realization in 1966. If the late Shri L. S. Kamat and late Shri N.T.Hegde and other local luminaries put their heads together about the starting of a college, the first ever independent commerce college in the district, the late Dr. A. V. Baliga played the role of Providence in finding the wherewithal for the firm establishment of the college. Further, considering the growing importance of management education the horizontal expansion of the college was took place by establishing BBA (UG) course in June 1998 and M.Com (PG) Course in August 2010 on self financing basis.
