One of the best technical education institutions in eastern India is Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology (MIT), located in Muzaffarpur. It is fully sponsored by the Bihar government and administratively overseen by the Department of Science and Technology. One of the oldest technical institutes in India, MIT was founded in 1954 and operates on the motto "Work is above everything else." Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, laid the foundation stone. 

The founding of M.I.T. occurred on September 25, 1954. Academically, the Institute is overseen by Bihar Engineering University, Patna, which grants B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees and is accredited by the Government of Bihar State and the A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi.
