Established in 1962 as part of Kerala University, the School of Legal Studies (SLS) is one of India's oldest law schools. It became a part of the University of Cochin in 1971, which underwent reorganization and was renamed as the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1986, enhancing its focus on graduate, postgraduate studies, and advanced research across various disciplines. Throughout the years, SLS has emerged as a premier institution for legal education and research in India, adhering to CUSAT's motto, ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu,’ which translates to ‘may the wisdom accrued deify us both—the teacher and the taught—and percolate to the universe in its entirety.’
SLS offers LLB, LLM, and Ph.D. programs. The LLB program, initiated in 1994 as an evening course, has evolved into a full-time, semester-based program. Following the Bar Council of India's directives in 2009, the five-year LL.B. course was restructured, introducing the BBA LLB (Hons.) program. In 2013, SLS also launched the BCom LLB (Hons.) program. The one-year, full-time LLM degree program at SLS provides specializations in Administrative Law, Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, Consumer and Competition Laws, Corporate Governance, Criminal Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, among others.
Admission to SLS CUSAT courses requires passing an entrance examination and securing a position on the rank list. The CUSAT-CAT entrance test is applicable to the LLB, BCom LLB (H), BBA LLB (H) programs, and the LLM course. SLS CUSAT's amenities include hostels, a Wi-Fi-enabled library, moot court facilities, classrooms, and sports facilities.
