Thiagarajar College was established on July 7, 1949, and officially inaugurated on October 12, 1949 by His Excellency, the King of Bhavnagar, who was the Madras State Governor at the time. The college has been one of Madurai's top establishments since its founding. It is meticulously managed by Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust.
Today, it offers 28 undergraduate, 12 graduate, 11 M.Phil., and 10 Ph.D. programs, in addition to 13 diploma and 16 certificate programs. The private, coeducational, assisted college is affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University and has received a rating of "A++" from NAAC for re-accreditation.
