Physiotherapy in 2025: Both Prevention And Healing

  1. Introduction

How many times in a day do you hear your friend, co-worker or family member mentioning that they have a sore back, stiff neck, or asking you about their posture?

You are probably noticing that in previous years, these complaints seemed to come mostly from older adults (not that long ago!), yet today many of you also hear the same concerns from younger adults, young students and business professionals. There is also a great deal of research that documents evidence of chronic pain to the back and neck occurring in nearly 1 in 3 young Indian adults under the age of 30. The sports world has a natural competitive nature that drives athletes to push the limits of sport injury; however as lifestyles change, there is still a huge demand for physiotherapy!

Physiotherapy is an approach that can assist with the treatment and management and the prevention of injury without medication - even restoring motion and resisting taking substances while recovering. Physiotherapy continues today still to remain one of the most progressive health care professions.

  1. The Importance of Physiotherapy Today

In the past, physiotherapy was thought of as something reserved for older adults or someone who was in rehabilitation after surgery. The stigma surrounding this health profession has changed. Here are a few examples of the clients that physiotherapists treat:

Students who study for hours that endure chronic postural problems,

Adults working 8-10 hours seated at a desk or computer,

Athletes or recreationalists wanting to improve, enhance performance and prevent injuries.

Recently, WHO published a report specifically citing that physical inactivity is now categorized as one of the top public health concerns in the world. The Lancet published an article this year citing the almost unbelievable increase in postural problems in the 18-35 age group in 2023.

To be clear - physiotherapy is not an option- physiotherapy is a necessity for a generation!

  1. Let’s Find The Hidden Reasons of Injuries

Let's be honest - the way our lifestyle has changed, it's an obvious outcome to have body pains and injuries. I have listed a few more in detail, let's have a look:

  • Sedentary lifestyle: Sitting for long periods at a desk also puts a lot of stress on the spine.
  • Screen time: An average Indian spends greater than six hours a day on a screen (Statista, 2024), contributing to "tech neck".
  • Lack of movement: Not exercising diminishes muscle pliability and balance. ? All of these factors lead to common forms of pain such as low back pain, cervical pathology, frozen shoulder and overuse injuries.

This is where physiotherapy comes in. Physiotherapy treats the condition, but may help prevent it from occurring as well. Athletes may use physiotherapy as a preventive measure to reduce the incidence of injury or to enhance performance. The best aspect is that the physiotherapy methods such as, manual therapy, corrective exercise, and electrical modalities work for all types of individuals and ages.

  1. Lifestyle Changes & Precautions – Guided by Physiotherapists

Preventative care continues to be one of the larger movements in healthcare today. A large component of preventative care is that physiotherapists help guide individuals into healthier lifestyles.

There are a number of common recommendations a physiotherapist might make:

  • Work in an ergonomic setting with an appropriate chair and desk height. ? Be mindful of posture in everyday life when sitting, walking, or lifting. ? Take stretch breaks every hour to hour-and-a-half when sitting at work or school. ? Incorporate a couple of simple exercises into daily movement.

Even companies all over the world like Google and Infosys have programs, including physiotherapy, in wellness, to improve employees health and work capacity.

So physiotherapists are not just healers, rather they are explicit health mentors for the long term.

  1. Scope of Physiotherapy as a Career

If you are thinking about your future career, understanding that physiotherapy is one of the most popular health professions today. For both clinical and non-clinical possibilities, the list is endless!

Physiotherapists will practice in various settings:

  • Hospitals and clinics, treating patients of all ages in various acute and chronic orthopedic and neurological conditions. Many hospitals are starting to consider physiotherapists as physicians.
  • Rehabilitation centers, helping patients regain independence and mobility from injuries and surgeries.
  • Sports and fitness, working with athletes; treating and preventing sports-related injuries and practices in clinics for the general population concerning their fitness levels.
  • In corporate wellness programs, teaching employees about sitting and standing postures as well as other lifestyle health management issues.

The demand for physiotherapists is very high - now more than ever - worldwide.

  1. How to Get Started with Physiotherapy as a Career

If you are thinking about this area, here is what you need to consider.

Eligibility: The minimum previous education required is 10+2 in a science stream (Biology).

Course options: Bachelor's of Physiotherapy (BPT) 4½ years with 6 months internship, or a Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) 2 years. There are also short term degrees and certificates in specific subjects.

Skills they are looking for are communication skills, empathy, problem solving skills and good knowledge of anatomy. There are also specialised forms of physiotherapy including neurological, pediatric, sports, orthopedic, and geriatric physiotherapy.

Some of the leading universities in this area include Chandigarh University and the program includes modern physiotherapy labs and clinical experience in Canada/ Overseas. CU students will receive experience in a clinical internship and employment experience during their education in healthcare experience.

  1. Career Growth & Opportunities

The growth of the physiotherapy profession can largely be attributed to professional practice changes, because of lifestyle changes and the global demand for care roles.

  • Physiotherapy careers can include physiotherapists who work in hospitals, sports academies, wellness clinics, and private practice as an advanced consultant. ? Advance education: The advanced education of a physiotherapist can usefully facilitate completing certifications in areas of sports rehabilitation, occupational health, geriatric, etc.
  • Entrepreneurship: Most physiotherapists own and run private clinics or wellness centers, or work collaboratively with gyms and sports teams. As the area of wellness becomes globally and exponentially normalized, physiotherapists are beneficently collaborating within the most future-proofed professions.
  1. Conclusion

Physiotherapy offers numerous advantages to patients beyond medical treatment. Ultimately, it is a modality that helps to prevent pain while allowing the body to heal through movement and without medication. All populations experience the condition: employed adults; athletes; older adults; and students.

Students expect physiotherapy to be more than just a typical profession. The profession combines purposeful work, prevention and treatment approaches, the union of science and care, along with compassion.

Due to the surge in lifestyle-related health conditions, physiotherapists have become valuable members of health care. The growth in the number of health conditions requiring physiotherapy services has expanded career opportunities for worthy individuals to pursue meaningful careers with global effects.

Physiotherapy offers pathways to a healthy lifestyle for more than a treatment path.
