2008 Recession still haunts Job-Seekers

For students, job security is the main attraction for employment in the government sector. A recent survey done by a reputed job portal showed that over 70 per cent of Indian youth applies for government jobs. This is a direct fall out of the 2008 global recession that caused many people to lose their private sector jobs. Government jobs provide security not only to employees but their entire family. In unfortunate circumstances like medical emergencies or death of an employee, the government provides jobs to one of their family members on compassionate grounds," said Mr M. Chandrashekar Goud, who was recently selected in APPSC Group-I exam.

He had left his senior executive's job in a corporate bank with a salary of 75,000 per month to prepare for the Group-I exams for two years. Another big reason why more students try for government jobs is that promotion is based on seniority while is performance-based in the private sector.Seniority based promotions, holiday packages, housing facilities, retirement benefits, extra off days on account of holidays are some of the other reasons for favouring government jobs.
