4 shortlisted for UoH VC post

Hyderabad: Names of four scientists were shortlisted for the post of vicechancellor of University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Thursday. They include— Prof Ramakrishna Ramaswami, School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Pramod Tandon, former VC of North East Hill University, Shillong, Prof D Basavaiah, dean, School of Chemistry, UoH and Prof C Raghavendra, School of Life Sciences, UoH.

According to sources, from among the four names, the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) is likely to choose Prof Ramaswami, an eminent academic and reputed research scholar.

Ramaswami, a PhD from Princeton University, US, was shortlisted for JNU vice-chancellor post. The two internal candidates from the UoH are well known scientists but have not occupied administrative posts for long, sources said.

“The top administrative post of the university is not usually given to an internal candidate,” university officials said. The fourth candidate Pramod Tondon is also an executive committee member of the UoH.

The names of four candidates were shortlisted at a meeting of the search committee constituted for appointing the new VC on Thursday.

The vice chancellor post fell vacant after former VC Seyed E Hasnain quit in December, 2010. While Hasnain was given an extension till June 28, 2011, he quit and joined IIT- Delhi.
