50 per cent of NIT-Warangal seats for Telangana students

Hyderabad: Half the seats in National Institute of Technology-Warangal will most likely be reserved for Telangana students and not for those from Andhra Pradesh as per the home quota rule.
Business rules for the joint seat allocations in NITs, Indian Institutes of Technology and other Central institutions that were released on 2nd May categorically stated that only students of the state where the NIT is located will get seats under the home quota. Students from the five Union Territories that don’t have their own NITs will be eligible for home quota in other NITs. Thus the list doesn’t include AP.

Counseling rules released jointly by the Joint Admission Board of the IITs and the Central Seat Allocation Board of the NITs made it clear those students of a state would get home quota seats in their state NITs. No separate provision was made in the counseling rules with regard to NIT-Warangal and NIT-AP. In simple terms, 50 per cent of seats (home quota) in NIT-Warangal will be reserved only for TS students and AP students will compete with those from other states for the remaining 50 per cent seats. Similar arrangement will be in place for NIT AP.

“Home state quota is only for candidates whose home state, as determined by the State Code of Eligibility, is same as the state in which the institute is located,” the rules stated. AP government officials also concurred with the principle. AP students will lose out as the new NIT in AP is likely to have less than 100 seats and a few branches. NIT-Warangal, on the other hand, has about 800 seats. But AP government may still seek a share under the home quota in NIT-Warangal in branches of engineering that are not available at NIT-AP.

“All branches will not be available at NIT in AP from the first year but are available in NIT-Warangal. Natural justice would be that AP students are admitted to those branches under home quota. But legally that may not stand," a senior official of the AP State Council of Higher Education said. The exact seat matrix will only be clear next month as and when the counseling process begins. Students from the UTs Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli will get seats in NIT Delhi, Puducherry and Goa under the home quota.
