6 medical colleges to get nod

HYDERABAD : Good news for students aspiring to study MBBS in the state. The state government has decided to approve the setting up of six new medical colleges in the private sector from the academic year 2011-12.

This will add 600 MBBS seats to the existing 4,500.The government is expected to issue a notification to this effect in a week. Two colleges would come up in Hyderabad and one in Visakhapatnam. The location of the remaining three colleges is yet to be finalised.

While the state has the highest number of engineering colleges in the country, there is an acute shortage of medical seats. The government had not been permitting new colleges for over five years citing lack of qualified faculty. Already, over 60 applications from various private institutions are pending with the government.

In these circumstances, getting an MBBS seat in the state has become an uphill task for students. At present, the number of students competing for an MBBS seat is 25.

This year, the demand has increased, as the number of applicants who chose the medical stream rose by 20,000. Last year, it was 50,000. Taking all these factors into consideration, the government decided to approve the new colleges, the permits of which will be given to hospitals running for more than five years.
