Aadhaar blocks scholarships

Despite stiff resistance from students over insisting on Aadhaar for grant of scholarships and fee reimbursement, the state government has been implementing 'mandatory Aadhaar norm'. Student organizations have been holding protests demanding removal of "Aadhaar norm" for the last six months. Bowing to their protests, the government had assured students that it will exempt Aadhaar for this year. However, the latest guidelines issued by the state government give "Aadhaar relaxation" for students only at application stage but during verification stage, students are asking to produce Aadhaar card for the disbursal of amount in their bank accounts.
Thousands of students could not submit applications due to this. With the government relaxing Aadhaar at application stage, they could submit applications, but now they are facing problems again as the officials are insisting on Aadhaar at verification stage.
Unless their application cleared, the students will not receive scholarship and fee reimbursement. This year, the government has received 26.55 lakh applications for scholarships and reimbursement. Of them, students from scheduled castes constitute 5.22 lakh, scheduled tribes 1.76 lakh, backward classes 14 lakh, physically challenged 2,000, economically backward classes 3.50 lakh and minorities 2.05 lakh.
The government had already released '846 crore. The amount is yet to reach the students as their applications are pending at 'verification stage" due to lack of Aadhaar.
"What is the point in giving Aadhaar relaxation only at application stage. The applications are anyway lying pending at verification-stage due to lack of Aadhaar. With this, Aadhaar-relaxation is serving no purpose," said R. Krishnaiah, president, AP Backward Classes Welfare Association. Students say that when the Centre can delink Aadhaar and LPG, why can?t the state implement the same for students. "Officials are carrying out physical verification of students. If there are any fake students, they can easily find out during this process. What difference it will make if students have Aadhaar or not," T. Anil Goud, an engineering first year student, told.
