All-India medical CET from next year

Its now official. The common entrance test (CET) for admission to all government and private medical colleges will not be rolled out from the coming academic session. Instead, the Medical Council of India and the Union health ministry have decided to introduce it from the 2012-13 academic session.Early this month, the Supreme Court had directed the central government to hold single eligibility-cumentrance examination one each for MBBS and post-graduate medical courses from the 2011-12 academic session.
However, sources said that it is impossible to put in place the logistics for a CET this year, especially because it is already March and the fact that assembly elections are coming up.

Union health secretary K Chandramouli told TOI,To put in place all the logistics to hold CET from this year will not be possible. It will be introduced from the next academic session.
MCIs governing body member Dr Ranjit Roychoudhury said,The roll out of the preparation to introduce CET in 2012 will be done on March 29.

The entrance examination will be held for MBBS and MD courses offered by all 271 medical colleges,138 run by governments and 133 under private management. These colleges offer over 31,000 seats for MBBS courses and another 11,000 seats for PG degrees.

Earlier,MCIs governing body member Dr Devi Shetty had said,At present,a student wanting to study medicine has to appear for 10-15 examinations, which can be highly stressful to both the student and his family.A CET will allow a student to give his best shot at one go.
At present, about 17 entrance tests are held to fill 32,000 UG seats in medical colleges across the country.CBSE,state governments and some private MCI colleges hold separate entrance examinations.
