AP boys shine in GATE

Students from Andhra Pradesh excelled in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) results, whcih were declared on 27th March. T Navin, a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) from IIIT, Basara bagged 8th rank in his branch. R Jaya Prakash, a final year student of NIT, Warangal secured 9th rank in EEE while Vamshi Krishna of Khammam got 14th rank in ECE.

G Mahesh (25th, ECE), G Sriramulu Naidu (30th, ECE) R Neelima (57, ECE) and L Karthik (75th, MME) -- all students of IIIT, Nuzvid were some of the top rankers in the examination.

This is the first time, the students of IIITs excelled in the national-level exam.

But at all India level, the results show a dismal picture as only 16.84 per cent of the candidates, who appeared for the test, cleared the examination. According to a release by the IIT Kharagpur, which conducted GATE-2014, a total of 10,33,625 candidates registered for GATE and out of those 8,89,156 candidates (86.02%) appeared for the exam. Out of them, 1,49,694 (16.84%) candidates, were qualified.

Category-wise, 85,063-General, 42,287-OBC (NCL), 17,085- SC, 4224-ST and 1035- PwD candidates cleared the exam. The number of female candidates receiving the scorecards is 31,431 (21% of the total females).The 17 PSUs having signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kharagpur will receive the GATE 2014 results.

Aspirants will have to apply individually to their desired Institute or University for admission into M Tech or ME or direct Ph D course. Since GATE score is being considered as the benchmark to measure a student's analytical capabilities, many institutions prefer to take it as a criterion. Interestingly, this year, more students prefer to take up job rather than pursuing higher studies. They are willing to join Public Sector Units according to an online survey.
