AP makes way for more med colleges

HYDERABAD : Paving the way for prominent corporate hospitals to set up their own medical colleges, the state government on Monday decided to issue a fresh notification inviting applications for opening 10 medical colleges in the state after a gap of five years These colleges will be permitted over a period of three to five years.

The open notification will invite applications only from hospitals functioning for more than five years and with more than 300 beds.

Several prominent corporate hospitals such as Apollo, Care, Yashoda groups etc have been evincing interest to start medical colleges for the last three years and have been urging the state government and the Medical Council of India to consider their applications.

The government constituted a high power committee under the chairmanship of Justice I. Panduranga Rao, a retired judge of the AP High Court to make appropriate recommendations for grant of Essentiality Certificate for the establishment of medical colleges in the state.
