AP says no to 2nd shift tech seats

HYDERABAD : The state has decided not to include about 8,000 engineering seats in 42 colleges in the ensuing Eamcet counselling that were approved by the All India Council for Technical Education as part of “second shift”.

Despite the government making a specific request to the AICTE about not allowing second shifts to these colleges, the AICTE has ignored it and has granted second shifts to about 42 colleges.

It has also been decided not to give the required approval from the state and affiliating universities for the seats offered under “second shifts”.

The issue had led to a confrontation between the government and AICTE last year too when the “second shift” was approved in 85 colleges.

However, the government declined to include those seats in the counselling after which some managements approached the AP High Court over the decision. The AP HC had only suggested the government to consider including those seats in the counselling depending on the requirement of students.

But the government did not include those seats saying that the state already has abundant engineering seats and that there was no need to consider inclusion of seats approved under the second shift.

“There was no need to grant second shift for colleges this year as the state has the highest number of technical colleges in the country. We already have over three lakh engineering seats in 714 colleges,” said Prof. D.N. Reddy, the vicechancellor, JNTU Hyderabad.
