Birla Group to set up first sports University in State

A world-class ‘Sports University’ with an investment of `2,000 crore will come up in the state. The Yash Birla Group has come forward to set up the first such university in the state spread across 450 acres within 100 kilometres of Hyderabad. The group signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect with the state government on Thursday as part of the Partnership Summit-2011, which began on Thursday.

“Everyone in the country is looking at engineering and medical education. But in the Western world, sports education is equally important. We want to bring such a culture to India,” said Mr Yash Birla, the chairman of the group. The company will finalise the location of the sports university shortly. “We are in the process of identifying suitable land for the purpose. Once it is done, we will approach the government with an action plan to set up the sports university within a stipulated time frame of five years,” Mr Birla said.

The university will train sportspersons from childhood and will encourage students to take up sports as a profession.He added that the project would be funded with a debt-equity ratio of 4:1. The equity component would consist of internal accruals, public issue, private equity and venture capital funding.
