C-11 telescope to open tomorrow for public

The G. P. Birla Observatory, housing the Schmidt-Cassegrain C-11 Telescope for amateur star gazers, and an Astronomical Research Centre will be inaugurated at B. M. Birla Science Centre on Thursday, November 17.

Built at a cost of Rs.20 crore and billed as the best amateur observatory in the country, the C-11 Telescope was donated by a French organisation Uranoscope De France. “The observatory will strive to generate interest in astronomy among youngsters. Now, enthusiasts can further their interest in research and witness astronomy by using the telescope,” said Nirmala Birla, wife of G. P. Birla during an interaction session with press persons here on Tuesday.

The C-11 telescope was presented to B. M. Birla Science Centre by Uranoscope De France as part of the 10-year partnership agreement between the two to attract more people to astronomy in India. “The telescope will help view celestial activity hundreds of light years away. This is a good opportunity for youngsters to witness the night sky in Hyderabad,” director general, B. M. Birla Science Centre, Dr. B. G. Sidharth said. Authorities said that the telescope and other facilities at the observatory can be used by amateur astronomers through prior appointment.
