Central education advisory board proposes scrapping of no-detention policy

Hyderabad: The country s highest decision-making body for education, the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), on Wednesday proposed scrapping the ?no-detention policy? in schools. States have been asked to give their views in writing within 15 days after which an amendment to the Right to Education Act (RTE) will have to be brought in. As per the ?no-detention policy? of the RTE Act, students below Class VIII have to be promoted to the next class irrespective of failure or success in final exams. Other issues, like the New Education Policy and extension of the RTE, were also discussed at length and subcommittees have been formed to study these issues. The no-detention policy was one of the major issues to be discussed at the first CABE meeting under the chairmanship of Union HRD minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday. Top officials from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh took part in the meeting. A CABE subcommittee report on the no-detention policy, which suggested a review, was tabled in the meeting. States have also been asked to study the report and give their views. AP and TS also agreed to the scrapping of the no-detention policy.
