Centre to introduce common admission test for all degree courses

The union government will introduce a common admission test for degree courses in the country from 2013 and prepare a common merit list in a bid to improve the quality of education, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said today.

The HRD Minister informed the Lok Sabha that the government would initiate action fake universities, collection of capitation fee, deceptive advertisements and other corrupt practices related to which a bill is being introduced.

Responding to a debate on a bill to amend the National Institutes of Technology Act, he said the government is interested in upgrading the quality of education and would provide facilities to set up world class universities in the country.

The National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010, which proposes certain changes in such educational establishments and bringing in its ambit the five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), was passed by a voice vote later.

He said the government plans to introduce unified admission test for admission to under-graduate courses from 2013 and prepare an all-India merit list, adding that an expert committee was looking into the issue.
