Credit goes to The Hindu, says Civils ranker

VIJAYAWADA: Christurajupuram here was in a festive mood with K. Hepsiba Rani getting the 20th rank in the civil services examination conducted by the UPSC.

The topper's residence was swarmed by visitors and well wishers with bouquets, and sweets. Belonging to an extremely humble family, she received everyone with a broad smile. It has been her dream from childhood to get into the IAS.

When asked what she remembers most during her preparation, Hepsiba said, “It is the support of my parents and family members.” The facts, accuracy, analyses, and news in The Hindu is a cut above the rest. I always banked upon it. And, the credit goes to The Hindu,” she said.

Hepsiba switched over to online edition of The Hindu after she began serious preparations for the civil services. The online edition updates for every half an hour, and gives an opportunity to analyse the developments and form an opinion even before the print edition was at your door step, she explains.

“I got opportunities to meet IAS officers as my father used to take me along with him. It had an indiscernible impact on me. The civil services became an obsession for me,” she told The Hindu. The women IAS officers like Rani Kumudini Devi and Veena Ish inspired her. Natarajan Gulzar, who served as Municipal Commissioner here, was one of the many officers who inspired her, she said.

Answering a volley of questions, Ms. Hepsiba said that it was her father Vijaya Kumar, working as Deputy EE in the VMC, was biggest source of inspiration to her. “My father used to discuss every issue with me. It helped a lot in my interview. For instance, I could give insider's view on urban problems, implementation of prestigious programmes like JNNURM,” she said. Hepsiba Rani, who has always been a brilliant student, has done her Masters in Geography from Delhi University, and won many accolades during her academics.
