Distance education to reach more people

VIJAYAWADA: I.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, said that distance education had proved to be useful for different sections of people and youngsters and for those who could not have regular education opportunity.

Addressing as quest of honour at the Convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) Vijayawada regional centre, Dr. Rao praised IGNOU for making all efforts to provide quality education in the distance mode and for spreading this all over the country. IGNOU regional director M. Krishnaiah presented the report.

The 22nd IGNOU Convocation was telecast live nationwide with the city centre conducting it at KBN College premises when certificates were distributed to the successful students of various courses. As many as 382 degrees were handed over to a mixed group of candidates consisting of mostly employed persons and also college drop-outs, housewives and so on. Most of the local candidates studied management, MCA and B.Ed courses in IGNOU city centre.

In his report, regional director Krishnaiah said that a good number of candidates had enrolled for the IGNOU courses at the city regional centre in the past three years and it was for the second time that the centre was participating in the nation-wide convocation. Established in June 2008, the city regional centre had been offering most of the 450 programmes being offered by the IGNOU at the national level, he added.

Stating that distance education came to be a boon for those not able to access formal education, Dr. Krishnaiah said that over 2.5 lakh candidates studied various courses of IGNOU at the all India level while 382 candidates took advantage of the courses locally.
