Dravidian varsity VC charged with lapses. Angry Students Ransack VC Chambers

Kuppam: Alleging that Dravidian University vice-chancellor Cuddapah Ramanaiah had committed several irregularities, angry students on Thursday attacked his chambers and ransacked the administrative office.

Hundreds of students went to the VC’s chamber this morning and damaged the furniture. They also flung plastic chairs in the administrative office and hurled flowerpots on the ground. They shouted slogans and blamed VC Ramanaiah for the rampant irregularities on campus. They alleged that no action was coming forth despite several complaints about the illfunctioning of the VC’s office.

Sources said the university has been dogged by various controversies ever since it was set up in October 1997. Apart from the controversy over the appointment of professors and assistant professors, irregularities came to light in Ph D admissions a couple of months ago forcing the state government to ban Ph D courses through distance education offered by universities in the state from the next academic year.

Apparently, the state found several irregularities in Dravidian University, which awarded about 8,000 PhDs to scholars. The university was also embroiled in a controversy over student admissions last year.

The university was established by the government to integrate development of Dravidian languages — both written and spoken — including tribal languages.
