Eamcet: bid to check impersonation

HYDERABAD: To cut down impersonation at the grassroots level, the EAMCET authorities are now verifying the photographs of applicants with the photographs submitted for the Intermediate examinations by the same candidate.

The JNTU-Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor and EAMCET-2011 Chairman, D.N. Reddy, said that impersonation was a problem particularly in the medical test and that verifying the students' photographs on both the EAMCET and Intermediate applications will put an end to such malpractice.

“We can catch the wrongdoer before the exam itself,” he said. Dr. Reddy said that some people have sent anonymous letters on the centres and people who are likely to commit malpractices and the EAMCET Committee has decided to look into this issue seriously.

The EAMCET Committee has also proposed to introduce biometric signature for medical stream candidates this year in view of the previous experiences. Prof. Reddy said that they had proposed to introduce thumb impression in the digital mode apart from taking a photograph of the candidate entering the hall.

This will ensure that the candidate taking the exam and appearing for counselling will be the same. So any attempt of impersonation will be cut down.

“We are looking into the cost factor and also whether to buy the equipment or use the services of private company,” he said. “This idea is yet to be approved by the higher authorities,” Prof. Reddy said.

He said that officials have also decided to use jammers in the medical exam of the EAMCET, keeping in view last year's episode where students tried to enter the exam hall with modern gadgets connected to mobile phones outside. Concentration would be on centres that have been identified as “notorious”.

Vacant seats

Prof. D.N. Reddy expressed the view that about one lakh seats might go vacant this year in engineering courses. This year, engineering applications have reduced by nearly 50,000, and, at the same time, 20 new colleges are likely to get sanction this year adding to the huge pool of available seats.

Hall tickets

Hall tickets will be issued from April 25 to May 2 at all the regional centres including holidays. Hall tickets not collected there will be sent by post. Students who don't receive hall-tickets can also apply for duplicate hall tickets at the Regional Coordinator's Office.

Hall tickets can also be downloaded from www.apeamcet.org from May 16 onwards. Such hall tickets have to be surrendered at the test centre.
