Engineering Colleges Threaten to Boycott EAMCET Admissions in Telangana

The controversy which has engulfed Eamcet engineering admissions is far from over with the Telangana government cracking its whip on 174 engineering colleges citing sub-standard facilities and cancelling their affiliation to JNTU-H and the Telangana Engineering Professional College Managements' Association (TEPCMA) deciding to move the court. As the High Court is not in session, TEPCMA is likely to file a house motion petition Monday.

"Irrespective of the outcome, all 315 engineering and pharmacy colleges in the State will remain united and decide whether or not the 140 enlisted colleges should participate in the admission process," declared association chairman N Goutham Rao here Sunday. The association questioned the intention behind the government?s move as colleges apart from the ones affiliated to JNTU-H i.e. rest of the colleges under the Osmania, Kakatiya and Mahatma Gandhi universities, have retained their affiliation.

The members of the association said there was no need for a second round of inspection by the government when the All India Council for Technical Education had already concluded the process in April this year. Meanwhile, officials assured students not to worry about the government's decision to keep nearly one lakh engineering seats out of bounds. Out of last year's 1,84,575 engineering seats, the government has given permission for 85,455 seats for the current academic year.

According to estimates, a total of 80,479 candidates in Telangana have qualified in Eamcet. Following the release of intermediate supplementary results, the total number of eligible candidates has reached 95,000.

"Considering that many students joined IITs, NITs and deemed universities in neighboring states due to controversy surrounding Eamcet admissions, the shortfall of seats will not make any difference as the student-seat ratio will be 1:1," a senior official said.
