Engineering colleges to shut down

Seek immediate release of fee due for the year 2011-12
The Consortium of Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements Association has decided to close the engineering and other professional colleges from Tuesday demanding the immediate release of fee due for the year 2011-12.

The decision was taken after a meeting of the association on Sunday, consortium chairman N. Ramesh and secretary general K.V.K. Rao, announced. They said the dues from the government were around Rs. 2,600 crore and unless the amount was released there was no way colleges could be run.

Their contention was that they were not even in a position to pay salaries to the faculty. “How can we run colleges when the fee is not paid even after five months of the academic year is over”, they wondered.

Mr. Ramesh said that notice was given to the government on January 5 itself making their intentions clear if the government failed to release the fee. He was of the view that the issue cannot be dragged in the name of verifying the students' data.

No other option

“The students would be hit hard with the closure decision but we don't have any option left,” he said and called upon the government to release the payment calendar for next year too apart from finishing the data verification by February 10.

At the same time Government should fix the fee for both A and B categories as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, another group of association headed by P. Rajeshwar Reddy said they were meeting on Monday to decide on the closure issue.
