First woman to earn PhD in Photography

LUCKNOW: Tulika Sahu, a student of Arts College, has become the first woman in the country to earn a doctorate in photography, a rare subject for a doctoral programme
Tulika was recently awarded PhD for her research on pictorial movement in photography between the late 19th and the early 20th century. Her work was supervised by Bhupesh Little who said he was proud that Tulika has achieved this landmark.

"Photography has never been equipment-based. It's a high class art which requires deep thinking. Snapping the moments using mobile phones can be fun but actual photography is not a lens, but an eye,'' explained Tulika.

Born in a family of photographers, Tulika had this art in her genes. At the age of seven, she started photography as a hobby. ``There are many childhood photographs where I find myself with a camera. There were many times when my father sent me to the dark room, asking me to get a particular print developed,'' said Tulika.

At the age of 10 she was sent to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Faizabad. "Before I left, my father gifted me a camera. In the hostel, I was the only student having a camera which I carried along everywhere I went,'' recalled Tulika.

As the eldest child of working parents, there was no one to look after her. "When my parents worked on dishes to develop a photograph in a dark room, they kept me on one of the dishes. May be, it is from here that I had an inclination towards photography,'' she said.
