GITAM's Distance Learning attracting students from across the State

VISAKHAPATNAM: GITAM University's distance learning programmes, offered through its Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) are attracting students from all parts of Andhra Pradesh, Vice-Chancellor G. Subramanyam said while addressing a State-level CDL Coordinators' meeting here on Saturday.

The university was initiating several steps to reach the distance learners in Andhra Pradesh, particularly through e-learning, live classes and innovative curriculum design, Prof. Subramanyam said. Pro Vice-Chancellor D. Harinarayana announced that GITAM University was planning to start five new PG programmes through distance mode and steps were taken to simplify the study material in UG courses. GITAM CDL introduced internal assessment system and live class room facility to reach the students with quality education, he said.

Distance learning was an alternative to increase student enrolment in higher education in the background of 81 per cent of the people not able to pursue higher education and the governments were facing several problems in running the universities, Prof. Harinarayana pointed out.

GITAM CDL Advisor G. Suryanarayana stressed the importance of distance education in rural areas and said that women empowerment was possible through distance education in India.

GITAM Institutes Principals N. Lakshmana Das, K. Sivaramakrishna, P. Suresh, CDL Joint Director N. Srinivas, Chandrasekhar participated in the interactive session and discussed various issues related to distance learning programmes.
