GMAT administrator looks to bolster India presence

he Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), US-based administrator of the GMAT exam, is trying to strengthen its foothold in the Indian business school admissions market.

Education NewsGMAC has announced it will assume ownership and management of NMAT exam meant for admissions to Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies ( NMIMS).

The exam will be retitled 'NMAT by GMAC', and be accepted by seven other institutions including SRM University, BML Munjal University, VIT University and ICFAI Business School for their graduate management programmes. The council plans to develop the test further and take it to other countries as well. Registration for the NMAT by GMAC exam will start in July and it will be conducted between October and December this year.

"Testing and admission systems for management education in India are fragmented and biased towards people with high quantitative skills, that is engineers, and this is not fair to management education," said Sangeet Chowfla, president and chief executive of GMAC. "We want to create an assessment system that is psychometrically balanced and evaluates students from diverse backgrounds. It should be fair and not biased against non-engineers and women."

While the format of the two-hour test, which includes sections on language skills, quantitative skills and logical reasoning, will remain unchanged for now, GMAC plans to gradually change it. The council is considering year-long tests instead of the 90-day testing cycle. "We hope more schools accept it when registration starts in July. We think it will create a testing platform independent of schools," said Chowfla.

"US volumes fell dramatically because of recession. In the last year, volumes stabilised but remained almost flat. India is a very important part of our strategy. We are very serious not just in the study abroad segment here, but also committed to Indians wanting to study in India. We want to professionalise that and bring global best practices here," said Chowfla. GMAC is also trying to make taking GMAT more applicant friendly.
