Government proposes to convert SC, ST hostels into residential schools

The State government has plans to convert all the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes hostels into residential schools, according to Social Welfare Minister Ravela Kishore Babu here on 24th September.Talking to media persons, he said there were 1,440 SC and 167 ST hostels in all. The number of students studying there were about 4 lakh. "The Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has a proposal to convert all these hostels into residential schools in a phased manner," he said.

The Minister further said there were in all 42 lakh students in government schools and as high as 42 per cent of them were children belonging to the SC and ST. The government aimed to provide quality education as in corporate schools. "We are also providing visual education in residential schools. Selected best teachers would take classes in Mathematics, Science and English. We are also planning a computer-aided instruction," he disclosed.

On the incidents of missing students and anti-social activities in social welfare hostels, Kishore Babu admitted that all was not well there. "That is why; we want to take preventive measures. We are also asking the outsourcing agency, who would provide staff like cooks and cleaners, to check the antecedents of the employees and make them sign a bond to ensure responsible behaviour and accountability.
