Grades Confuse SSC Students, Ease Tension

The grading method used for the first time in the SSC results announced on Thursday may have ended the mad race for marks and ranks but it has resulted in some confusion.

While it was evident that the grade system has taken the stress out of the SSC results as there were no ?toppers? and the usual euphoria associated with getting the highest marks and ranks was missing, not many students or parents have fully understood the new system which was announced just three days ago.

They are puzzled at the Grade Point Average (GPA) ranging from 3 to 10 points in place of the total marks that have appeared on the results websites and are desperately trying to calculate the marks these grade points would actually amount to.

Students, who were expecting ?state ranks? by securing 570 to 595 marks out of a total of 600 marks, looked very nervous when they found they had grade points of 9 to 10.
There was a general condemnation of the government for announcing the new system of awarding grades instead of marks at the last minute.

A question commonly being asked is how can students who score comparatively higher marks than others be cate
gorised in the same grade.

It will kill the ?competitive spirit?, it is alleged.

Minister for secondary education K. Parthasarathy said: ?The grading system is scientific and being followed by all the national and international boards. It will end the mad race for marks and de-stress students besides curbing competition among private schools.?
