HC notices to IIMs, CAT, GoI over alleged discrepancies in CAT 2013

Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh high court on Tuesday issued notices to all IIMs, government of India, CAT and Prometric Testing Pvt. Ltd (partner agency of CAT 2013) following a petition filed by some students alleging discrepancies in CAT 2013.

The petition was filed by aggrieved candidates Rutvij Waze and Vikram Singh of Indore and the notices were issued by double bench of Chief Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice J K Maheshwari.

Petitioners had alleged that they scored a low percentile because of faulty evaluation process of IIMs.

Piyush Mathur, one of the counselors of the petitioners, said the students filed the petition on February 12. He said before filing the petition, the students had submitted an application to IIM-Indore, which has conducted CAT 2013, and had met and talked to the coordinator of CAT 2013 but failed to give any satisfactory reply about the process through which the percentile of students was decided. The petition urged that there should be transparency in the evaluation process.

Advocate Mohan Sharma, who is assisting Mathur, said that nearly 5,000 students have been affected by the faulty evaluation process in Indore. He said it is very surprising that students have scored very good marks in one subject but in the other subject the score of the same student has been abysmally low.

Earlier thousands of students had cried foul over the normalization method and scaling process adopted for CAT and sought to know their raw scores. They had also alleged discrepancies in the CAT and had sought revaluation.

Their revaluation demand was put down by the organiser of CAT- 2013, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore, saying that there is no scope for revaluation in CAT but their requests for raw scores and the RTI queries were forwarded to agencies concerned.

Petitioner Vikram Singh alleged that he and many other candidates have failed to crack CAT due to the new scaling method. "All our attempts to know our raw marks proved futile," said Singh adding that they had even run an online petition over discrepancies in CAT 2013 and it was signed by over 7,000 candidates.
