IIM online CAT pattern revised

Chennai : The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Prometric, the company conducting CAT on behalf of IIM, have revamped the test this year by merging quantitative ability and data interpretation, besides mandating candidates to answer 30 questions in each section.

Prof Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 convenor, said the examination will be for 140 minutes and candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section with an on-screen countdown timer on the screen. Once the time ends for the first section, they will move on to the second and no longer be able to go back. Although new to the computer-based version of CAT, this format was practised in some of the earlier paper-and-pencil years. The number of test days has been retained at 20 within the window from October 22 to November 18. This will provide candidates flexibility to choose a suitable test day.

“Considerable effort has been invested in maintaining similar level of difficulty across papers. A small number of statistically and psychometrically validated questions will be randomly inserted in each question paper as equating blocks. These will be used for assessing post-test equality across the days,” Mr Moorthy added. A 15-minute tutorial will be provided before the start of the test. The total duration will be 2.35 hours, including the tutorial.

To reduce difficulties in purchasing CAT vouchers, candidates will also be able to purchase them from Axis bank branches across the country. Students can also check CAT website www.catiim.in for details.
