As per the data, while at least 40 out of the top 50 students have chosen IIT Bombay every year since 2018, more than 57 students out of the top 100 rankers have chosen IIT Bombay. The number was 63 in 2016 but declined to 57 in 2017 and 59 in 2018. It once again increased to 62 in 2019, only to decrease once again to 58 in 2020 and then again increase to 62 in 2021. In 2022 and 2023, 68 and 67 students (out of top 100) respectively chose IIT Bombay.

The total number of seats filled by the top 1000 rankers has also seen several ups and downs since 2016. IIT Bombay was the first preference of 401 students (out of top 1000 rankers) in 2016, which dipped to 395 in 2017. However, in 2018, it increased to 542 and then to 597 in 2019. Even though it decreased to 488 in 2020, it once again jumped to 657 in 2021, only to dip down to 529 in 2022 and then to 533 in 2023.

In the past eight years, the year which has seen some of the biggest lows is 2020. From the top 50 toppers, it was only in 2020 that 41 students chose IIT Bombay. Only 58 students from the top 100 chose IIT Bombay in 2020 which was a dip from 62 students in 2019 and 2021. Similarly, the number of students out of the top 500 opting for IIT Bombay dipped from 145 in 2019 to 108 in 2020 and then increased to 167 in 2021. A similar slowdown was spotted in the top 1000 rank list too as the number of students decreased from 597 in 2019 to 488 in 2020, and then dramatically jumped to 657 in 2021.

Placements

IIT Bombay is also known for its successful placement seasons. In the recent placement season of IIT Bombay, almost 400 recruiters offered over 1500 jobs to the students in the first phase. The number of job offers has been increasing and decreasing since 2017. There were approximately 1,114 job offers made in 2017 which increased to 1,112 and 1,319 in 2018 and 2019. It then jumped to 1,878 in 2021 and has already touched 1,500 in the first phase of the 2022 placement season.

Even the average salary has seen a steady increase in the past five years. The average salary of the 2017 placement season was 11.41 lakh per annum (approx), which then went up to Rs 18.5 lakh per annum (approx) in 2018 and then to Rs 10.34 lakh per annum (approx) in 2019. Even though there was a slight dip to Rs 18.40 lakh per annum (approx) in 2020, which could have been a result of the Covid pandemic, IIT Bombay picked up the amount again and touched Rs 22.7 lakh per annum (approx) in 2021. In 2022, at least 25 students received packages of over Rs 1 crore.
